Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a very light test of feeders sold with mostly steady undertones. About half the barns in the state were dark taking two full weeks off for the holidays. Auctions that did swing the gates had lighter than normal receipts which is to be expected on the holiday shortened weeks. Generally most folks know the two weeks of Christmas and New Year’s isn’t the best time to market livestock if you can keep from it. The monthly cattle on feed report was released last Thursday and came without any surprises being viewed as solidly neutral. Boxed beef cutouts closed on Thursday with choice at 262.94, down 0.07 and select at 252.95, up 4.67 compared to the previous week. Feedlot sales as of Thursday afternoon totaled just under 36k head. Live sales were reported from 135.00-140.00 with most sales at 135.00 and dressed sales were reported from 216.00-218.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 2330 head with a weighted average weight of 221.31 and a price value of 173.22, down 1.45 from last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?
