Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 750 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher, heavier weights sold mostly steady. Heavier weight cattle not as abundant now, as many especially the high quality ones have already been marketed at this point. The last full marketing week of the year did see very strong prices for the lighter weights though as prices continue to climb. The number of sales over the next two weeks will be very limited as barns take either one or two weeks off for the holidays. The weather continues to be quite odd for mid- December, southern Missouri did see some heavy rains and flash flooding late in the week. The northwest corner of the state caught some high winds and had some power outages but was spared most of the extreme damage that was seen into Iowa and north. Records highs were set again a few days last week, before cold came over the weekend, although another warm up is expected by Christmas. Surprisingly cattle seem to be doing pretty well with all the temperature swings and most producers are reporting not a lot of health issues with calves they have in the weaning pens despite the crazy weather. Negotiated feedlot sales were light this week, as the next two will be short holiday weeks and packers have most of the inventory they require just need enough to set a negotiated price for formula reasons as much as anything. As of Friday afternoon confirmed volume was just under 47K head. Prices were a bit lower this week with live sales reported at mostly 136.00-138.00 and dressed sales mostly 218.00. Boxed beef cutouts lost some ground this week as well, choice closed on Friday at 263.01, down 1.53 and select at 248.28, down 3.96 from last Friday. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 8411 head with a weighted average weight of 546.28 lbs. and a price value of 174.67, 2.19 higher than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
