Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago, feeders sold mostly 2.00 to 5.00 higher with instances of 8.00-10.00 higher. After the historic winter weather over the last couple of weeks, everyone was eager to get back to business. The supply of feeders was heavy due to a bit of a backup given there was an entire week with no sales. Demand was good especially for summer grass type cattle which is typical for this time of year. Fed cattle slaughter was estimated at 666K head last week as packers looked to make up from ground from the light week prior and continue to take advantage high boxed beef cutouts. On Friday choice closed at 240.53, up 1.30 and select closed at 229.73, up 1.83 from the previous week. Feed lot sales as of the last report on Friday totaled about 65K head. Sales were mostly steady with live prices reported mostly 114.00- 115.00 and dressed mostly 180.00-182.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 7245 head with a weighted average weight of 560.43 and a price value of 162.56.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
