No feeder sales this week for a market trend. This was the first week in at least twenty years that wasn’t Christmas or New Year’s week without a single reported feeder cattle auction in the state. Record breaking winter weather keep every reported action in the state dark except three special replacement cow sales held on Friday and Saturday. Boxed beef cutouts closed higher for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 239.23, up 6.86 and select at 227.90, up 6.97 compared to the previous week. Feedlot sales for the week as of the last report on Friday had volume of just over 65K head, live sales were mostly 113.00-115.00 and dressed sales mostly 180.00-182.00. Slaughter numbers were lighter this week once again due to winter weather though out the nation. The monthly cattle on feed report was published on Friday and was considered bearish as analyst missed placement numbers. On feed numbers were reported at 101.5 percent, marketings 94.3, and placements at 103.2 which was 3.5 percent above the average pre report numbers. Due to there was no feeder cattle auctions the Missouri Stocker Formula was not available.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
