Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 700 lbs. sold steady to 3.00 higher, over 700 lbs. weak to 4.00 lower and heifers sold unevenly steady from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. A very difficult week to nail down a price trend as many barns had to look back to two weeks for the last sale, and those that had sales last week were mostly special sales with a different type of offering than what was present this week. The supply of feeders was heavy, when all was said and done this week ended up being the second largest reported volume this calendar year. The largest string of cattle this week showed up at Joplin Regional Stockyards on Monday and consisted of 312 head of Medium and Large 1 steers averaging 809 lbs. selling with one drop of the hammer at 145.25. The highest per head was a 56 head draft of 1028 lbs. steers sold Wednesday at Windsor Livestock Auction which figured to be right at 1335.00 per head. Demand was light to moderate with lighter weight grazing type cattle by far finding the most options for outlets. The larger commercial feedlots are reported to be pretty full and just not overly eager to acquire a lot of heavier weight cattle right now. Smaller farmer feeders however are still filling some orders with plans to feed some of the 4.00 plus a bushel corn over the winter. Several question if that will pencil out or not, but regardless in some areas that’s been the winter project for generations. Boxed beef cutouts have backed off a little this week, as of Thursday’s close choice was reported at 239.19, down 3.66 and select was reported at 219.93, down 0.75 compared to last Friday. As of the report on Thursday afternoon near 80k head of feedlot sales have been reported. Live sales were reported from 109.00-112.00, mostly 110.00 which was steady to 1.00 lower. Dressed sales were reported from 172.00-174.00, steady to 2.00 lower. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 12,699 head with a weighted average weight of 551.48 lbs. and a price value of 154.18, 5.23 higher than last Friday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
