Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady, although steers over 700 lbs. sold firm to 2.00 higher. A much different type of offering this week with many auctions closed and several having light runs. That being said a few barns held specials making a moderate to heavy supply of cattle overall. Green City Livestock Market held one of two special sales early this week with many load lots of northern type yearlings. Unionville Livestock Market also held a special with several full loads of high quality yearlings, and Joplin Regional Stockyards had nearly 11K hand for a yearling special on Monday with near 100 full pot loads being sold. Last Friday’s cattle on feed report was even more bullish than expected; on feed numbers were at 101 percent, placements at 89 percent, and marketings at 100 percent. Feed lot sales as of the last report early afternoon on Wednesday showed just under 50k head of negotiated sales so far this week. Live sales mostly steady to 1.00 higher at 110.00-111.00 and dressed sales mostly 2.00 higher at 174.00. Boxed beef cutouts continue to climb choice closed on Wednesday at 245.06, up 6.71 and select at 220.90, up 5.92 compared to last Friday. Wednesday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 6,383 head with a weighted average weight of 560.79 lbs. and a price value of 149.70, 0.62 lower than last Friday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
