Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower and heifers sold 3.00 to 7.00 lower. Supply was moderate with a good even span of light weight all the way to heavy weight cattle in the offering. Still many were calves just heavier weights. There was some yearlings but in reality true long time yearlings are pretty short in supply this time of year. Demand was moderate for weaned and worked cattle and light for unweaned bawling calves that are having a hard time finding any one really wanting to take the risk of trying to straighten them out currently. The weather is just down right awful for trying to keep cattle healthy, which is always the case in October, and will remain that way until some stable cold weather sets in. Some moisture finally came to the state this week. Much too late for pasture growth but beneficial to winter wheat and stock water supplies. The monthly cattle on feed report will be published Friday afternoon pre-report estimates have on feed numbers at 103.2, placements at 102.4, and marketings at 105.8. Boxed beef cutouts were lower again this week, choice closed Thursday at 208.86, down 1.17 and select 191.08, down 2.44 compared to last Friday. Feedlot sales saw most of this week’s volume on Tuesday and Wednesday at much lower levels. Live sales were reported from 103.00-106.00 and dressed 162.00-165.00. Friday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consisted of 3812 head with a weighted average weight of 548.03 lbs. and a price value of 141.35, down 6.21 from last Friday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
