Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, calves sold 3.00 to 5.00 lower and yearlings sold steady to 3.00 lower. The supply of feeders was moderate and demand continues to be very dependent upon health programs. The week ended with much cooler temperatures and a pretty heavy frost for most of the state on Friday morning. Moisture continues to avoid the state and drought areas are slowing intensifying each week. Reports of some hay feeding taking place and even some water concerns for some producers. The one up side to the dry weather would be for grain harvest. Corn harvest is slightly behind the 5 year average but over 50 percent complete according to the latest progress report. Bean harvest is about even with the 5 year average nearing 25 percent complete. These numbers are released early in the week however so progress and condition data is typically a week behind by the time this report is released. Boxed beef cutouts continue to decline, Thursday’s close for choice was reported at 210.48, down 3.58 and select at 196.50 down 3.32 compared to last Friday. Feed lot sales lost ground this week ending the several week climb. Most sales should be done for the week as of Thursday afternoon just under 98k head have been reported. Live sales were reported mostly at 107.00-108.00 and dressed sales mostly 168.00-169.00 both steady to 1.00 lower. Friday’s Missouri stocker formula consisted of 4,211 head with a weighted average weight of 546.26 lbs. and a price value of 147.56, 2.42 lower than last Friday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
