Compared to the last special two weeks ago, a light test of 400-450 lb steers sold with a sharply higher undertone, with 450-600 lb steers selling fully steady to firm, spots 3.00-5.00 higher on the 550-600 lb steers, 600-700 lbs sold firm to 6.00 higher with over 700 lbs trading with a firm to higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold steady, with 500-550 lbs trading 3.00-7.00 higher, 550-700 lbs sold steady to firm, with 6 pot loads of 700-735 lb heifers all trading with a higher undertone, a pot load of 759 lb heifers off the same consignment and weighing the same as two weeks ago sold 5.00 higher. Demand was very good on a moderate to heavy offering of feeders with thirteen pot loads of yearlings steers and heifers weighing 650-765 lbs all sold on a very active market with a top quality offering along with the steers and heifer calves. Stick out sales included 81 head of fancy blk 659 lb steers at 316.00, pot load 697 lb steers at 292.00, pot load 763 lb steers at 275.25, 230 head of heifers averaging 725 lbs sold for 266.75 and a pot load heifers weighing 695 lbs sold for 277.00. Slaughter cows traded steady to 3.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
