Compared to last week, all weights of feeder steers weighing 400-750 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone on last week's much lighter offering of steer calves as last week's sale was centered around the pot loads of heifers weighing from 600-725 lbs and pot load of 875 lb steers. Feeder heifers had the best test on 450-500 lbs selling mostly 20.00-25.00 higher, with 500-600 lbs trading 8.00-10.00 higher and 600-700 lbs selling steady to 3.00 higher on last week's active market, pot load of 758 lb heifers were not well tested. Demand was very good on a top quality offering of weaned steers and heifer calves, several large groups of top quality yearling steers and heifers selling in part loads and three pot loads with good weighing conditions weighing from 600-750 lbs sold on and active market. Slaughter cows on a light test sold steady to firm.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
