Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs on a light test sold with a higher undertone, 500-650 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 15.00 higher, 650-700 ls sold steady to firm with 700-750 lbs selling with a sharply higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 450-550 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher with 550-650 lbs trading steady to 5.00 lower, pot load of 666 lb heifers sold 5.00 higher than the pot loads of similar weight from two weeks ago and a pot load of 715 lb heifers sold with a higher undertone. Demand was good to very good on a moderate supply. Overall quality was very good on the steer calves weighing 400-650 lbs and heifer calves weighing 400-550 lbs all sold on a very active market going to grass. Several stick-out sales included 27 head 650 lb fancy/thin steers at 303.50, three strings of fancy 702-707 lb steers with good weighing conditions sold from 284.00-286.50, Pot load of 666 lb heifers at 262.50 and pot load of top quality blk 715 lb heifers at 254.00. What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
