Compared to last week, feeder steers weighing 400-650 lbs sold steady to firm, with 650-700 lbs selling 5.00-8.00 higher and a pot load of 805 lb steers sold with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lbs sold steady on a lighter offering with a couple of top quality large strings of 550-605 lb heifers trading with higher undertone, three pot loads of 670-687 lb heifers sold steady with last week's pot load, and a pot load of 711 lb heifers sold near 4.00 higher than last week's pot load of similar quality and weight. Demand was good on a moderate supply with several stick-out sales a pot load of 804 lb steers sold for 256.75, 60 head of blk heifers weighing 602 sold at 287.75 and a pot load of 711 lb heifers at 257.75. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
