Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 450-550 lbs sold firm to 6.00 higher, 550-600 lbs sold with a higher undertone with two weeks ago limited offering, 600-700 lbs traded mostly 5.00-10.00 higher with the most advance on the 600-650 lb steers and 700-750 lbs sold unevenly steady. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs on a light test sold with a firm to higher undertone, 500-700 lbs traded 10.00-15.00 higher, spots 18.00 higher. Demand was good on a moderate offering. The main attraction was 5 pot loads of 6 weight heifers with several part loads in the mix. Steer calves weighing 450-650 lbs sold with good demand on a nice quality offering. Slaughter cows sold 4.00-8.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
