Compared to last week, steer calves under 500 lbs sold with a higher undertone on limited sales from last week, 500-600 lbs sold steady to firm, 600-700 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher and 700-800 lbs traded 7.00-10.00 higher. Feeder heifers weighing 400-450 lbs sold 10.00-20.00 higher, 500-600 lbs sold 5.00-12.00 higher with 600-700 lbs trading steady on similar weights with 7 weight heifers not well tested. Demand was moderate to good, best on light weight calves going to grass and 600-750 lb steers. Several consignments of good quality Charolais cross steers and heifers in Tuesday's consignment. Slaughter cows sold with a higher undertone on a light test with last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
