Compared to last week, feeder steers weighing under 500 lbs were lightly tested, with 500-750 lbs trading 5.00-15.00 higher with the most advance on the 600-750 lb steers, pot load of 816 lb steers sold with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 5.00-15.00 higher, with 500-700 lbs selling 5.00-10.00 higher and two pot loads of top quality heifers weighing 700-740 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate supply with several stick out sales, a part load of fancy 701 lb steers sold for 270.75, two pot loads and a part load of 700-740 lb heifers sold from 240.60-242.00 with and active market on the 500-700 lb steer calves . Slaughter cows on a very light test sold mostly steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
