Compared to last week, steer calves weighing under 600 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on last week's light test, 600-700 lb steers sold steady to firm, with a nice offering of 700-750 lb steers trading firm to 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers weighing 500-600 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher, a part load of 680 lb heifers traded near steady with several pot loads of 700-750 lb heifers selling with a higher undertone.on few comparisons from last week. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply. Market was active on feeder steers weighing 400-750 lbs and the pot loads of good quality 700-750 lb heifers. Slaughter cows sold steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
