Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves on a light test under 600 lbs sold steady to firm, with 600-700 lbs steers trading steady to 5.00 higher, 700-750 lbs sold 5.00-8.00 lower and over 800 lbs were not tested. Feeder heifers weighing 500-600 lbs sold steady to firm, with a large offering of 650-700 lb heifers not well tested with two weeks ago, but sold with a weak to lower undertone. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate to heavy offering, bulk of the feeders weighed over 600 lbs. There were a couple of highlights with a top quality pot load of 900 lb steers selling at 224.75 and a consignment of 304 head of heifers averaging 671 lbs selling at 224.85. Slaughter cows on a very light offering sold steady to firm on the better cows.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
