Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves under 550 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone, 550-650 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher with 650-700 lbs selling steady to firm and 700-750 lbs sold mostly 7.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 500 lbs were lightly tested, with 5 weight heifers selling steady to 5.00 lower, 600-650 lbs 4.00-6.00 lower and pot load of 715 lb heifers of similar weight and quality traded 12.00 lower than pot load from two weeks ago with two pot loads of 770-782 lb heifers selling with a lower undertone. Demand was moderate to good with supply moderate the best demand was on 450-650 lb steers. Quality was very good on the steer calves weighing 450-700 lbs and sold with good demand on and active market. CME cattle futures continue to ride a volatile roller coaster reversing sharp losses on Monday as selling seemed to be exhausted from Monday's trade as Feeder Cattle contracts for January closed with limit gains of 8.25 and March and April up 7.20. Live Cattle contracts front three months closed 2.87 to 4.20 higher. Slaughter cows sold firm to 5.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
