Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs were lightly tested, with 500-650 lbs selling 10.00-15.00 higher, spots 20 .00 higher on the 5 weight steers, a light test of 650-700 lb steers sold steady to firm, with 700-750 lbs trading 7.00-10.00 higher over 750 lbs were not tested. Feeder heifers weighing 500-600 lbs sold steady to firm, spots 3.00 higher and 600-700 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on a much lighter offering from two weeks ago, over 700 lbs were not tested. Demand was good to very good to start the year, especially on the steer calves much more than the heifer calves. Quality was very good on the steers weighing 500-750 lbs with many groups and part loads in the offering along with the 600-700 lb heifers all selling on and active market. Slaughter cows sold steady with two weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
