Compared to last week, a much lighter offering of feeders this week, with 400-500 lb steer calves lightly tested but trading with a weak to lower undertone, 500-550 lb steers sold 5.00-7.00 lower than last week's sharply higher market pretty much giving up last weeks gains, light test of 550-600 lbs sold firm to 5.00 higher, with 600-650 lb selling fully steady to firm, and 650-710 lbs lightly tested with several stick out sales of groups of fancy blk steers selling sharply higher on a very active market. Feeder heifers weighing 500-600 lbs sold steady to spots 3.00 higher, with 600-750 lbs trading steady to firm on a light comparison with last week and a pot load of 830 lb blk heifers sold with a sharply higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate offering of attractive quality steer and heifer calves weighing mostly 500-700 lbs and a pot load of 830 heifers selling with very good demand. Slaughter cows on a light test sold steady to firm with last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
