Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 450-700 lb sold firm to 5.00 higher, with 700-750 lb selling with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs this week traded with a sharply higher undertone than last week's light test, 500-600 lbs sold steady to firm with 600-700 lbs selling firm to 2.00 higher. Slaughter cows on a light offering traded steady to firm. Demand was good on a moderate offering with three pot loads of 660-676 lb heifers in the offering trading on and active market along with a nice quality offering of 450-750 lb steers.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
