Compared to the last auction two week's ago, the best test was on 500-600 lb steers trading 5.00-7.00 higher and 600-700 lb steers selling 3.00-6.00 higher other weights of steers weighing 450-500 lbs and 700-800 lbs all sold with a sharply higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-700 lbs all sold with a firm to higher undertone on limited test with the 700-750 lb heifers trading firm to 3.00 higher compared to the pot load lots from two weeks ago. Overall a very attractive offering of steer calves and yearlings all selling with very good demand especially the steer calves weighing 450-650 lbs that will go to grass and 700-750 lb steers and the strings of 650-750 heifers. Slaughter cows sold mostly 5.00-8.00 higher than two weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
