Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week feeder steers 550 to 600 lbs. were 2.00 lower, 600to 650 lbs. were steady, 650 to 700 lbs. were 12.00 higher and 700 to 750 lbs. and 800 to 850 lbs. were 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers 500 to 550 lbs. were 2.00 higher, 600 to 650 lbs. were 19.00 higher and 650 to 750 lbs. were 12.00 to 17.00 higher this week. Very good demand for todays offering which included several load lots as well as nice strings of calves in most weight classes. The nice weather this past week has allowed ranchers to get their calves to market. Most have a series of shots and weaned a long time. Buyers are pushing the market to get their orders filled again this week. Most feeders came in with light to moderate plus flesh condition.
