Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week with limited receipts feeder steers this week 600 to 650 lbs. were 10.00 higher, 700 to 750 lbs. were 6.00 higher , 750 to 800 lbs. were 6.00 lower and 800 to 850 lbs. were 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers could not be compared due the low numbers last week. Buyer demand was very good this week as buyers are trying to fill orders. There is getting to be smaller numbers of light feeders coming to market for buyers to put on grass for the summer. This if reflected in the higher prices being paid by buyers. There seems to be much optimism in the future prices for the feeders being purchased today. Most feeders were in light to moderate plus flesh condition and the gap is lessening in what is being paid for red versus black calves.
