Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?

Compared to last week both steers and heifers traded mixed. Feeder steers 450 to 550 lbs. were 2.00 to 14.00 higher, 550 to 600 lbs. were 1.00 lower, 600 to 650 lbs. were 5.00 higher, 650 to 700 lbs. were 10.00 lower and 700 to 750 lbs. were 5.00 higher. The only weights for comparison in the heifers were 400 to 450 lbs. steady, 550 to 600 lbs. were 8.00 higher and 600 to 700 lbs. were 5.00 to 6.00 lower. Most feeders did not look as attractive and carrying a lot of tag today. Most were brought out of muddy corrals to market and buyers were worried about getting them to their clients due to the muddy conditions. Most feeders were in light to moderate flesh condition. Buyer demand not as aggressive as last week but this should change as weather conditions improve.
