Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers sold unevenly steady, while heifers sold 1.00 to 4.00 lower. Demand was good to very good for calves again this week and yearlings were moderate to good as one more marketing week prior to the Christmas and New Years week holidays. Compared to last week, slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower, while slaughter bulls sold unevenly steady. In the feedlot trade, live sales sold mostly steady at 191.00. In the hay market, This past week, demand remained light, and prices were mostly steady. Kansas did see a few more loads move this past week, but producers feel that is likely due to the holiday and cooler temperatures. The supply of hay available remains heavy and will probably stay that way until after the first of the year.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
