Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 800 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher, while steers over 800 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower. Heifers sold mostly 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Demand was good as this is the last auction feeder cattle marketing week of the year in Kansas. Compared to last week, slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 3.00 higher. In the feedlot trade, live sales sold steady at 191.00. In the hay market this past week, demand remained light, and prices were mostly steady. The supply of hay available remains heavy as almost all contributors indicated that there is lots of hay sitting around. Those producers wanting to sell their hay are discouraged by the lower prices and many have chosen to hold onto their hay until prices rise. Cattle are still grazing on wheat and rye in some areas and the warm and dry weather all contribute to less hay being fed. What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
