Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago, steer and heifer calves under 600 lbs sold 15.00 to 25.00 higher while those over 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 8.00 higher. Demand was good to very good for calves this week as buyers were aggressive to fill orders after a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday. Compared to two weeks ago, slaughter cows sold 4.00 to 8.00 higher, while slaughter bulls sold unevenly steady. In the feedlot trade, live sales sold steady to 1.00 higher at 190.00 to 191.00, mostly 191.00. In the hay market, demand remained light, and prices were steady. Grinder hay movement did pick up a bit this past week, but no one is reporting deliveries to new customers . The supply of hay available remains heavy and will probably stay that way until after the first of the year, unless, of course, Mother Nature decides to throw us some wintry weather.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
