Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers under 800 lbs sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher, while those over 800 lbs were steady to weak. Feeder Heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher on limited comparison this week. Demand was good. Slaughter Cows and bulls sold unevenly steady. In the feedlot trade, live sales sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher at 186.00 to 187.00. In the hay market, demand remained light, and prices were steady. Fewer trades in the marketplace continues, and therefore, movement of hay is minimal. Loads being delivered are to those with long term customers and hay that was contracted during the summer. Conversations this past week revolved around the lack of interest in grinder hay and expectations are, that we will not see that change until after the first of the year. The rain is a blessing for most areas but frustrating those who still have crops in the field awaiting harvest.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
