Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, Feeder Steers sold steady to 5.00 higher with some instances of 10.00 higher on the 600 lbs cattle. Feeder Heifers sold uneven 5.00 lower to 5.00 higher. Demand was good. Slaughter Cows sold 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady. In the hay market, demand remained light, and prices were steady. Buyers are still not buying, but sellers aren't interested to selling at these lower prices, putting the hay market at a standstill. Loads being delivered are to long term customers and hay that was contracted in the summer. Kansas is finally receiving rain, and although it makes things muddy and hard to work in, I think most welcome it to as it will replenish the soil moisture and fill up ponds. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor for November 5th, Significant rains fell over much of Kansas, into southeast Nebraska and southeast Colorado.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
