Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers under 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 6.00 higher; over 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers overall sold steady to 4.00 lower, with the exception of those weighing 500 to 600 lbs selling 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold uneven; breakers and boners steady, and leans 8.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Demand was reported as moderate to good throughout the state. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feed yards sold steady at 175.00. In the hay market, demand remains good, prices remained steady, trade activity remains slow. Not much new to report. Kansas remains dry and the wind continues to blow. As one producer put it "even the jack rabbits are carrying canteens". There is a very real sense of concern for this year's hay crop across the state and several producers have stated they have lost partial stands of alfalfa.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
