Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers overall sold 4.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifers overall sold steady to 4.00 higher, with the 7 wt heifers selling 7.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold uneven; 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Demand was reported as good throughout the state. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feed yards sold 5.00 higher at 175.00. Compared to the last Kansas Hay report demand remains good, prices remained steady, trade activity remains slow. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor for April 4th, changes were made including a slight expansion of an area of Exceptional Drought (D4) in central Kansas. Currently, 50% of Kansas is depicted in the extreme or exceptional (D3-D4) drought categories with 12-month precipitation deficits ranging from 4 to 16 inches.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
