Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week, feeder steers sold 6.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifers under 600 lbs sold 11.00 to 15.00 higher; over 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold uneven; breakers and boners steady to 1.00 lower and lean cows 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady. Demand was reported as moderate to good throughout the state. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feed yards sold 2.00 lower at 173.00. In the hay market: compared to the last report demand remains good, prices remained steady, trade activity remains slow. Dry and windy is repeatedly reported throughout most of the state. New crop pricing is slow to come in, as most are unsure whether they will have much of a hay crop. Corn planting is taking place in the east and central regions while folks are backing off in the west due to the lack of rain.
