Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week, feeder steers under 700 lbs sold 7.00 to 10.00 higher; 700 to 800 lbs steady to 1.00 higher; over 800 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 800 lbs sold 3.00 to 5.00 higher; 800 to 900 lbs 9.00 to 10.00 higher; over 900 lbs steady. Slaughter cows sold uneven; leans and boners steady to 2.00 higher, breakers 6.00 to 7.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Demand was moderate. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold 2.00 higher at 150.00. In the hay market, prices were mostly steady for a second week while demand remained strong, supplies available to purchase remained slim. Reports indicate there is not much alfalfa out there to purchase, unless one is willing to pay up for it. A number of wildfires erupted across the state over the weekend due to the extremely dry conditions and high winds. Although Monday's rain brought some relief to the eastern half of the state, it did little to help the tinder box out west.
