Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers sold 1.00 to 5.00 higher, with the exception of 800 to 900 lbs selling 3.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs sold 3.00 to 5.00 higher; over 700 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold uneven; breakers and boners steady to 3.00 lower, leans 3.00 to 4.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 3.00 to 6.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold 3.00 higher at 148.00. In the hay market, prices were steady, and demand remained strong. As the drought drags on, spirits are low, and concerns remain high with producers and end users in the hay and forage industry. Reports indicate there is not much out there to purchase, unless one is willing to pay up for it. Those that have hay left are either keeping it for their own use or hanging on to it for even higher prices.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
