Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers under 700 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher; 700 to 800 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 lower; over 800 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Feeder heifers overall sold 1.00 to 3.00 higher, with the exception of 800 to 900 lbs which sold 4.00 to 5.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold uneven; leans and boners steady to 1.00 higher, breakers 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold 5.00 to 6.00 higher. Demand was good. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold steady at 150.00. In the hay market, prices, once again were mostly steady and demand remained strong while stores continue to dwindle. Some folks are still swathing their last cutting of alfalfa which seems to be taking twice as long as yields are so light. Lots of corn and milo stalks have been baled as feed yards are trying everything to stretch that alfalfa hay.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
