Compared to last week: steer calves 450 to 549 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher, 550 to 599 lbs 8.00 to 12.00 higher, yearling steers 950 to 999 lbs and 1000 to 1049 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 5.00 lower on 950 to 999 lbs. Heifers 450 to 499 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 higher, 500 to 549 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 lower on a narrow comparison, other weight classes of heifers not well compared. Good to very good demand for yearling cattle this week. The feature consignment was a string of 1000 steers, several other loads and a few packages completed the yearlings. A few cattle off grass but the rest have been in yards for awhile, flesh ranged from light to some heavy flesh at times. Very good demand for calves today. Quite a few loads and many packages of calves on offer, the majority off the cow. Lots of attractive calves to choose from in varied flesh, from light to moderate plus. Most of the calves had full preconditioning or at least one round of good fall shots. The weather has changed dramatically. Very strong winds, cold temperatures and snow across much of the area creating blizzard conditions in places. A wind advisory is in effect until later this evening. The change in weather did not deter buyers and the market was very active with many buyers and farmer feeders determined to get cattle bought. No feeder cattle next week due to Thanksgiving, next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, December 4 and a special weaned and preconditioned calf sale Saturday, December 7. Happy Thanksgiving!!

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
