Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steer calves 500 to 549 lbs steady to 3.00 higher with an instance 16.00 higher, 550 to 649 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher. Yearling steers 900 to 999 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 450 to 499 lbs and 550 to 599 lbs 4.00 to 7.00 higher, yearling heifers not well compared. Good to very good demand for yearlings with best demand for loads still coming off grass. Very good demand for a large calf offering today. Many packages and loads available, almost all off the cow. Most calves had at least one full round of shots, but buyers were less fussy about shots than last week. Calves were attractive in quality and in varied flesh but less flesh overall than seen last week. An active market which never weakened with many buyers and farmer feeders determined to own cattle. Weather remains pretty mild for this time of year but cold and snow are possible next week. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 20.
