Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
No feeder cattle last week due to Thanksgiving, compared to two weeks ago: steers 450 to 499 lbs 2.00 higher, 500 to 599 7.00 to 12.00 higher, 700 to 749 lbs and 950 to 999 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Heifers 450 to 549 lbs 20.00 higher. Good to very good demand for both yearlings and calves today. A few packages and a handful of loads of yearling cattle available. Quality varied quite a bit, from plain to attractive, but with fewer yearlings coming to town every week buyers are aggressive to fill orders before these cattle are all gone for the season. A large calf offering selling mostly in packages. A few weaned packages today but most of the calves off the cow and almost all were preconditioned. Varied quality and flesh condition. An active market with both buyers and farmer feeders in the seats eager to get calves after the holiday week. Next feeder cattle sale is Saturday, December 7, the special weaned and preconditioned calf sale, and regular feeder cattle sale Wednesday, December 11.
