Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 600 to 649 lbs and 750 to 849 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher with instances up to 12.00 higher on 750 to 799 lbs, 650 to 749 lbs mostly steady, 850 to 949 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 12.00 higher. Heifers 600 to 699 lbs mostly steady, 701 to 799 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Good to very good demand for today's large offering of loads, multiple loads, and packages. Similar to last week, demand for big cattle hinges on flesh condition. Lighter cattle suitable for summer grass and backgrounding programs continue to be very sought after as number of these decline each week. Some tag but many cattle were clean and open haired as lot conditions continue to improve. Quite a few colored cattle again this week, many of these reputation Red Angus which were well received. An active market with a full house of both buyers and sellers. The area continues to enjoy warmer temps than normally seen this time of year and forecasts for the next week are more of the same. Another large offering expected for next Wednesday, February 28.
