Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 550 to 949 lbs 1.00 to 5.00 lower except 800 to 899 lbs not well compared. Heifers 700 to 749 lbs mostly steady, 650 to 699 lbs and 750 to 849 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 lower, other weight classes not well compared. Another large offering this week with many packages, loads, and multiple loads of home raised and backgrounded cattle. Good to very good demand for backgrounding type cattle, especially those with the potential to be grass cattle. Mostly good demand for finishing type cattle depending on flesh condition. Varied flesh condition, from light to heavy, with some tag at times but many of the cattle were clean hided. A few cancellations due to weather yesterday with North Dakota seeing more snow and everyone getting the very windy conditions. Lots of attractive cattle on offer, including quite a few colored cattle again this week. An active market despite a lower board today. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, March 6.
