Compared to last week: steers 600 to 699 lbs mostly steady, 700 to 799 lbs and 850 to 899 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 lower with instances up to 10.00 lower on 700 to 799 lbs, 800 to 849 lbs not well compared. Heifers 600 to 699 lbs mostly steady, 700 to 799 lbs 6.00 to 8.00 lower. Another large offering this week with plenty of loads, multiple loads, and packages of both home raised and backgrounded cattle to choose from. Very good demand for lighter cattle to go to grass or background, good demand for finishing type cattle depending on flesh condition. Some tag again this week as lot conditions are not drying very much this time of year, yet it is too warm for them to remain frozen. Quality similar to the last few weeks with many attractive cattle on offer, a few more colored cattle this week. An active market with buyers, farmer feeders and replacement heifer buyers in the seats, activity only slightly dampened by a down feeder board again today. Some snow in the area and south today creating some travel issues. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, February 21.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
