Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 550 to 649 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, 650 to 799 lbs 2.00 to 7.00 higher, 800 to 849 lbs not well compared, 850 to 899 lbs mostly steady. Heifers 550 to 749 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Good to very good demand for another large offering this week featuring many packages and loads of both home raised and backgrounded cattle. Many attractive cattle to choose from again this week, both for finishing and for backgrounding. Flesh condition varied, but mostly light to moderate plus with some tag at times. An active market again this week with lots of enthusiasm in the industry right now. The area is still enjoying amazingly warm weather for this time of year, however, this is becoming challenging as lots, yards, and roads are very muddy and are not drying. The last week has seen little to no sun and lots of heavy fog and cloud cover. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, February 14.
