Compared to last week: best test on steers 550 to 599 lbs, and 650 to 749 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher with instances up to 15.00 higher. Best test on heifers 550 to 649 lbs 10.00 to 13.00 higher. Good to very good demand for today's large offering featuring many packages and loads with best demand seen for cattle suitable for summer grass, especially those selling in loads. Flesh varied, from light to some heavy flesh at times, but there were some very green cattle today as they have just come through the last week of very cold temperatures on lower quality feedstuffs. Lots of attractive quality cattle today, the majority of them were home raised and long time weaned. An active market with buyers and farmer feeders competing to get cattle bought. The weather has improved greatly from last weeks' sub zero temps and windchills. This week has much milder temps in the 30's with the promise of 40 degrees and warmer for the ten day outlook. This is a much needed break for livestock and their caretakers. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, January 31.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
