Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers not well tested this week for comparison. Best test on heifers 850 to 899 lbs and 950 to 999 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Calves not well compared. Good demand for yearlings today. Like previous weeks, most yearlings sold in strings and loads and came off grass, the only difference being this weeks' yearlings were mostly heifers. Mostly average to attractive quality yearlings in the strings and loads, packages offered had more varied quality with more plain cattle included in these. Moderate demand for a few consignments of calves, including one weaned consignment. Most of the calves had a decent shot record. An active market for yearlings, moderate market for calves. A few more farmer feeders in the seats this week for calves but most are still trying to harvest. Some areas saw quite a bit of rain at the end of last week, lots and fields are slow to dry this time of year. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, October 25.
