Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No feeder cattle last week, compared tp two weeks ago: best test on steers 800 to 899 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher with instances up to 20.00 higher on 800 to 849 lbs. Best test on heifers 650 to 699 lbs and 750 to 799 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Very good demand for this large offering featuring a wide variety of cattle, including replacement quality heifers, fall calves, and several strings of big, backgrounded yearling cattle. Flesh varied quite a bit, from light to heavy flesh at times. An active market with buyers taking multiple loads of the same man's cattle to get pens filled. Temps have continued to be higher than normal these last few weeks with some areas seeing spotty rain but most of the area has gotten dry and is in need of rain. Crop and grass conditions still look decent so far, first cut alfalfa is getting started. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, June 14.
