Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 800 to 899 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 lower, 901 to 1149 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 lower except 1050 to 1099 not well compared. Best test on heifers 750 to 799 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 lower, 800 to 899 steady to 2.00 higher, 900 to 949 5.00 to 7.00 lower with instances up to 10.00 lower. Good demand for another large offering this week. Quite a few loads and strings again but also plenty of packages to choose from, lots of home raised cattle included in the offering today. Flesh similar to last week, from light to some heavy. A few consignments coming off grass, mostly replacement heifers, as some areas are getting very dry and producers are running out of grass. A moderate to active market with lower futures putting some pressure on the market today. Buyers are being more cautious this week. Temps continue to be hotter than normally seen this time of year and rain has been very spotty. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, June 21.
