Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 800 to 849 lbs 3.00 higher, 850 to 949 lbs 6.00 to 8.00 higher. Best test on heifers 700 to 749 lbs 3.00 higher. Most other weight classes saw higher undertones. Very good demand for this lighter offering featuring a couple strings of steers and many packages including quite a few fall calves. Quality mostly average to attractive today and flesh varied, mostly light to moderate plus. An active market with buyers determined to own cattle as numbers coming to town dwindle each week and they are determined to keep up inventory to market this fall. Grass conditions look very good in this part of the country, farmers are getting crops planted while going around the low spots. No feeder cattle next Wednesday as there will be a special pair sale.
