Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 700 to 749 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher and 800 to 849 lbs mostly steady. Best test on heifers 650 to 699 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher, 700 to 799 lbs mostly steady. Good to very good demand for today's offering featuring a couple of strings and many loads and packages including several consignments of replacement quality heifers. Mixed quality again this week, especially on packages, overall quality more attractive than last week. Flesh varied, from light to some heavy flesh at times, as well as some tag from muddy yards. An active market with most of the normal crowd of buyers attending, more farmer feeders are getting into the field and fixing fence as the weather has been good. Most of the area got a nice rain last weekend and more rain forecasted for the next few days. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, May 17.
