Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: steers 500 to 750 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 higher, 751 to 950 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 lower. Heifers 550 to 600 lbs and 651 to 700 lbs steady to 4.00 higher, 601 to 650 and 700 to 850 lbs steady except 750 to 800 lbs not well compared. Another large offering of feeder cattle this week with many loads, multiple loads, and packages offered. Feeding type cattle met with mostly good demand depending on flesh and tag, grass type cattle saw very good demand. More flesh overall than seen last week. Quality varied quite a bit, from plain to attractive. More tag on the cattle this week as lot conditions continue to worsen. A mostly active market for this offering with another day of losses on both CME feeder and live cattle putting some pressure on the market. Winter does not seem to want to leave the area, some snow, high winds, and cold temps expected for the rest of the week. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, March 22.
